Call for ideas to change Brussels

Addictlab project to create a blue print for Brussels 2.0

Imagine a city - Reason why

Call for multidisciplinary research for the www.Brusselslab.com project.

They say the sky hangs low over Brussels, the bureaucracy weighs heavy and the day-to-day’s a grind. But there’s something else, something you’re part of and shaping every day. This city, which brings together people from around the world, is also one huge vibrant mass of talent and potential. We say the time has come to unleash it all upon Brussels streets, let it spill into parks and bounce off rooftops. In partnership with TEDx Brussels, we challenge you to challenge the capital of Europe, set it on fire with big ideas and even bigger actions, and see it rise like a phoenix from the ashes. It’s easy: connect with your environment and tell us what change YOU want to see. You can share your master plan in a few words, a simple drawing, or photographs.

Since their launch in 1984, the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conferences have developed into a massive global community of knowledge seekers. Several times a year the world’s brightest minds – from Al Gore to Jane Goodall – assemble and are challenged to defend their viewpoints in an an 18-minute speech. All talks can be viewed for free on the website. Anything goes in terms of topics, from the mathematics of war to growing fresh air. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a programme called TEDx. The local, self-organised events bring people together to share
a TED-like experience. On November 23, the very first TEDx Brussels took place at the European
Parliament.  Find out more on the TEDxBrussels site (www.tedxbrussels.eu).

Raincatcher

labmember 266: Atohms

For a greener city. The raincatcher is a very special kind of umbrella. It has a second function/purpose. When it rains the raincatcher will unfold itself like a flower and catch the rain - The caught water can be used to water your lawn and plants or to fill up the kiddy-pool.

Brussels Hills on the Beach

labmember 3784: Boguslaw Witkowski

We propose the creation of a concept based on a bee hive pattern or an ant hill rather than continuation of a box like existing modernist or high-tech morphology.
The destroyed natural landscape should be restored and built up with architecture based on the interaction between vegetal of the surrounding installations (Royal Park of Laeken, navigation canal) and the newly created volumes.
The soft and natural created tectonic lines will remind us that we are part of Nature: important, clever, responsible; yearning for peace and harmony.

Shallow sentiment analysis for "Brussels"

Labmember: Tom De Smedt

What are people saying about Brussels? Can we derive a useful starting point, or noteworthy problems in the state of Brussels as it is from these expressions?
With "sentiment" is meant feelings, opinions, personal and subjective expressions.
With "shallow" is meant that none of these results are representative.
They originate from an internet mining algorithm with the general purpose of providing creative inspiration, new angles of thought. [published in The Bulletin]
