The Implications of Social Media on Marketing
The scale of impact of the technology of social media on marketing has been likened to the impact of Television. Social media is normally thought of as social networking sites such as facebook, and LinkedIn, collaboration sites such as wiki’s and the various blog and content marketing sites.
“Social media’s biggest consumer impact” according to Walter Pike, founder and thought leader at PiKE a marketing consultancy “is in how it has shifted the power from the seller to the buyer by creating connections and collaboration between them. The strategic impact will be even more profound, as social media will affect how companies communicate, innovate, test markets, recruit, measure performance and interact with suppliers as well as their stakeholders”
Debates in the marketing press rage as to whose domain the new internet is. Claimed as it is by the traditional above the line advertising companies and the direct response agencies who have, they believe, more experience of one on one marketing. The website designers and SEO experts, who understand the algorithms that run the internet search engines also lay claim to the internet space.
The answer in truth, is none of the above. Advertising agencies are stuck in the interruption marketing paradigm which is the skill of placing the advertising where the consumer is, watching a TV show, sport or reading a newspaper. Direct response agencies and telemarketers are selling, and the techies know how to make it work not the what and why.
“The new marketing domain is really in the hands of a new kind of marketing consulting company” says Walter Pike, “a company that understand the essence of marketing as the delivery of value and has the strategic and organisational ability to act on the business itself. The new PiKE approach of customer intimacy for example is based on a transparent, trusting relationship with open communication (talking) and is an integrated branding solution relying as it does on both engaged customers and empowered employees”
This connected economy is a very different place to the controlled process based economy of just a short while ago, it requires relearning decades of management thinking and learning to manage where there is no control. Furthermore this is not something that’s still coming to South Africa you better believe that its already here, the tail is already wagging the dog.
We must quickly understand how to cope.
