#453 Drifting Between Life and Waste

Drifting Between Life and Waste: A Plastic Metaphor for Climate Action

Three jellyfish, suspended in plastic bottles, float in an artificial stillness. At first glance, they appear delicate, almost ethereal. But a closer look reveals the truth—they are not creatures of the ocean, but ghosts of plastic, shaped from the very material that threatens marine life.

This artwork transforms discarded plastic bottles into jellyfish, blurring the boundary between nature and pollution. A jellyfish inside a plastic bottle is more than an eerie image—it is a metaphor for our oceans suffocating under the weight of human waste. Just as jellyfish drift with the currents, plastic does too, traveling vast distances, breaking down into microplastics that infiltrate ecosystems, food chains, and even our own bodies.

Plastic pollution is not just an environmental issue; it is a climate issue. The production, degradation, and persistence of plastic accelerate biodiversity loss and disrupt marine ecosystems, weakening one of the planet’s most vital climate regulators—the ocean.

Through this piece, I invite viewers to see plastic not just as waste, but as a warning. If we do not act now, will the only jellyfish left be the ones made of plastic?
